Abstract

The introduction and rapid spread of smartphones among the Dutch population has made the innovative research domain using smartphones as a new method of data collection an increasingly important area for further investigation. The Netherlands Institute for Social Research | scp has been engaged in one of the first experiments involving the use of a smartphone app to collect time use data in combination with real-time information measured by experience sampling and auxiliary data through reality mining. For a pilot study using smartphones as a survey tool, scp worked closely with CentERdata, a research institute attached to Tilburg University. This report provides a detailed summary of a pilot study conducted in the Netherlands in 2011/12 to test the use of smartphones in carrying out time use surveys. The pilot was carried out as a feasibility study among a group of subjects not representative of the general population. As a next step, data have been collected from a representative sample of the adult Dutch population (using the liss panel) during the year 2012/13.
